For the past several years, I’ve been reading a genre called LitRPG—literature with a role-playing game elements woven into the story. Finding cards, reaching skill achievements, crafting armor, just a few examples of how RPG can be included into a story.
It’s like reading a Dungeons & Dragons campaign in book form… or at least, I assume it is. (Confession: I’ve never actually played D&D—but that’s a story for another time.)
Most LitRPG books are part of a series. In fact, I’ve only ever found one or two standalone stories. The shortest series I’ve finished was six books long (Life Reset by Shemer Kuznits). The very first LitRPG I read was NPCs, the first book in the Spells, Swords, and Stealth series by Drew Hayes. I originally discovered it while between releases of another Hayes series (Fred the Vampire Accountant), and once I picked it up…
I. Was. HOOKED.
Almost ten years later, I still can’t get enough of this genre.
So imagine my excitement when I found out LitRPG Con was happening for the very first time—and they were looking for volunteers!
Now, I’m not the kind of reader who remembers every stat, skill, or exact line from every character. But the chance to meet the authors (and let’s not forget the narrators!) of the books I love? That’s a quest I couldn’t resist. Between us, Jeff and I have worked countless trade shows, festivals, and fairs, so I asked if he’d be willing to join the volunteer squad. He said yes!
Last night, I submitted our volunteer application.
Now… we wait.
