Martin and Dia de Muertos: Remembering the People We Love

November 1, 2026

Martin the dragon celebrating Dia de Muertos

Hola, friends! Martin here.

Today and tomorrow, families across Mexico celebrate Dia de Muertos. It is one of my favorite traditions, because it is not sad or scary. It is a celebration of love and memory.

Here is how it works. November 1 is a day to remember children who have passed, and November 2 is a day to remember adults. Families build an ofrenda, a special altar with photos, candles and favorite foods of the people they miss. Bright orange cempasuchil flowers, also called marigolds, are said to guide loved ones home with their color and scent. Families also share pan de muerto, a sweet bread made just for this time of year, and tell stories that keep memories alive.

Even the skulls are friendly! Calaveras, or sugar skulls, are decorated with swirls, flowers and big smiles. They are a reminder to remember with joy.

Dia de Muertos reminds me that traditions are a way of keeping people close, even when they are far away. That is a big part of what I learned while exploring holiday traditions around the world in 24 Days 'till Christmas.

Click here to try a Dia de Muertos Quest at home. Choose one person you love and remember. Draw their picture, write down your favorite story about them, or share their favorite snack with your family. Then tell someone the story out loud.

Who would you put on your ofrenda? Tell me in the comments.
